Test Leads FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the differences between the various types of TPI test leads?

Push-on tip test leads

  • Limited adaptability. Accept push on alligator clips only.
  • Made of PVC insulation

Screw-on tip test leads

  • More adaptability. Allows attachment of screw on accessories like alligator clips and adapters. More secure attachment than straight tipped test leads
  • Screw on tip test leads can be converted to modular test leads using the A052 modular adapters.
  • Made of PVC or Silicone insulation depending on lead.

Modular test leads

  • Most adaptability. Allows selection of different ends or tips for varying applications. One modular lead can be used as a grabber, back probe, standard lead, etc.
  • Lead ends and tips are easily interchanged.

Fused test leads

  • Increased safety over standard non-fused test leads. Fuses in a tester protect the tester; fused test leads protect the user.
  • Used for additional safety when making voltage measurements.

Which test lead type is right for me?

The type of test lead you need is dependent on the applications you encounter.

  • If your applications require a standard lead and occasionally an alligator clip then the push on series of leads would work.
  • If you require a more secure connection of the alligator clip or would like the ability to use modular lead accessories in the future then the screw-on tip is right for you.
  • If your applications are varying and require several types of leads then modular leads are the correct choice.
  • If you have applications that require the utmost in safety then fused leads are the best choice.

What is the advantage to using modular test leads?

Modular test leads offer the most versatility of any lead set. Various types of lead tips can be used for different applications. A modular lead can be changed from a standard prod with handle to an insulation piercing probe, to an alligator clip lead just by changing the type of lead tip.

Can I use modular lead accessories with my screw-on tip test leads?

Yes, by using the A052 modular adapters. Screw the A052’s onto the tips of your test leads makes them modular.

What are important specifications when considering test leads?

Strands of wire

  • The more strands of wire in a test lead, the more flexible it typically is.
  • Higher strand count increases test lead life.
  • TPI silicone insulated test leads offer higher strand counts than PVC insulated leads.

PVC Insulated test leads

  • Durable low cost lead.
  • Useful for general test and measurement applications.

Silicone Insulated test leads

  • Most durable test lead.
  • Double insulated for safety. When half the insulation is worn away or when a lead is nicked or cut, you will see a white strip. This strip indicates half the insulation is gone and the lead should be replaced.
  • Flame retardant. PVC test leads will burn or melt when exposed to heat.
  • More flexible than PVC leads.
  • Typically carry agency approval such as: cULus and IEC category ratings.
